Why You Should Care, and What You Should Know You've just received an email from the SpammerTrap with subject "MTA Stress" and your wondering what that means and what you can do about it.
Q: What does MTA stand for? MTA stands for Mail Transport Agent. It is the process/program on your SpammerTrap that is responsible for accepting and delivering email. Q: What is MTA Stress? MTA stress alerts are caused when a SpammerTrap MTA reaches its process limit; each model of SpammerTrap has a different maximum process limit to help maximize the efficiency of the device. Usually this is caused by spikes in email being processed by the SpammerTrap such as email attacks. Q: Will email still be processed while in a stress state? Yes, your emails will still be received and processes like normal. The stress adaptive behavior of the SpammerTrap allows the machine to continue to function even under unusually high load. This maximizes efficiency and ensures a minimum chance of system failure, where other products will crash and become unresponsive. Q: Will I be notified again when the system exits it's stress configuration and returns to normal? No, the system will silently return back to normal mode when it detects the overall load on the MTA to beat normal limits again. Q: What can I do to stop it, or fix it? Infrequent alerts don't indicate a problem, however if you receive these alerts from your SpammerTrap more than once per week, it could indicate a problem. Stand Alone Appliance Generally this indicates that your machine is reaching its upward limits of performance. Considerations should be made to upgrade to a higher model or consider a load-balanced deployment. Clusters & VPS If you are only receiving these MTA Stress alerts from one SpammerTrap node then it could indicate that your current clustering configuration is not properly load balanced. Contact SpammerTrap support for further assistance. If you are receiving these alerts from all of your clustered nodes, see "Stand Alone Appliance" above.
